Hormone Optimization

Hormone Optimization

Our hormones become depleted and unbalanced when we keep pushing through the demands of our modern lives- let alone pregnancy, fertility treatment, postpartum, perimenopause, menopause, poor diet, pesticides, and environmental toxins. All of these factors are in the addition to a natural, physiological decline in hormone levels in women over the age of 30-35. Each hormone, like a music instrument in an orchestra, must be tuned to produce a beautiful melody.

Moreover, once we start to approach perimenopause (as early as 35 yo), we may experience other symptoms, such as irregular/heavy periods, fatigue, ‘brain fog’, poor memory, irritability, mood swings, insomnia, low libido, vaginal dryness, joint pain, hair loss, difficulty losing weight, and, of course, the most famous hot flashes and night sweats. Furthermore, women are typically facing unique challenges related to their roles as caregivers during this period of life. This can be a particular stressful time as we feel being pulled in multiple directions, and may struggle to balance the needs of our loved ones with our own. If hormone imbalance is present, which most likely it is as cortisol, the stress hormone, further complicates the biochemical processes, it becomes harder to be our best for ourselves, our family, and our community. Most of us are overbooked, have numerous deadlines, and multitask every day so our bodies remain in the state of a constant stress, which leads to the disruption in production and metabolism of other hormones, such as estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, pregnenolone, DHEA, etc., even in the presence of healthy diet and regular physical activity. Bio-identical hormone replacement within the physiological level is beneficial for women of peri- and menopausal age to preserve cognitive function, mitigate cardiovascular risks, delay bone loss, and prevent the premature onset of genitourinary issues.

Furthermore, gut lining is directly affected by the stress hormone, cortisol, which results in the disrupted gut microbiome and ‘leaky gut’. Impaired gut lining allows for more toxins to pass through, liver becomes overwhelmed with accumulating toxins and less efficient at detoxification. Most toxins are fat-soluble, and body fat becomes a ‘warehouse’ for these toxins further perpetuating weight gain. And would you guess why some people look older than their age while others seem to barely age? Genetics, certainly, plays a significant role, however, it’s our lifestyle that makes even bigger impact on what genes are switched ‘on’ and ‘off”.
